Ubuntu is distributed over the Internet as CD image files, called ISOs. To install Ubuntu, you first need to burn its ISO file onto a CD. You need a working CD/DVD burner and an 80 minute (700 Mb) CD for this. This page explains how you can do it using Windows, Mac OS X, Ubuntu and Kubuntu. If the CD writing fails, try writing at a slower burn speed. The UbuntuHelp:CDIntegrityCheck page describes how to verify the integrity of the finished disk. MD5 Sums
Before burning a CD, it is highly recommended that you verify the md5 sum (hash) of the .iso file. For instructions, please see UbuntuHelp:HowToMD5SUM. This ensures that the downloaded file is intact and prevents you from creating a bad burn.
In Windows 95 / 98 / ME / 2000 / XP / Server 2003 / Vista
1. Download and install Infra Recorder, a free and open source image burning program. 1. Insert a blank CD in the drive and select Do nothing or Cancel if an autorun dialog pops up. 1. Open Infra Recorder, and select the 'Actions' menu, then 'Burn image'. attachment:infrarecorder2.png 1. Select the image file, then click 'Open'. 1. In the dialog, click 'OK'.
In Mac OS X
Note: To burn most ISOs, you can use Apple's Disk Utility (Disk Copy in older versions).
1. Launch Disk Utility (Applications → Utilities → Disk Utility) 2. Drag the ISO to the sidebar of the Disk Utility main window. 3. Select the ISO where you just dragged it, and choose (Menu → Image → Burn...) 4. In Disk Utility, ensure that the Verify burn checkbox is ticked (you may need to click on the disclosure triangle to see the checkbox). 5. Insert a blank CD → Burn. 6. Check that verification (if available) was successful. If verification was not available, at least make sure that a sample of directories on the CD can be accessed by the finder.
In Ubuntu
1. Insert a blank CD into your burner. A "CD/DVD Creator" file browser will pop up. Close this browser as we will not be using it. (Edgy will say "Choose Disk Type", click 'Ignore") 1. Find the downloaded ISO image in the file browser (available at Places → Home menu on top of the screen.) Right click on the ISO image file and choose Write to Disc and wait for burning to complete.

In Kubuntu
1. Find the ISO image in the file browser (available at System Menu > Home Folder on bottom of the screen next to KMenu.) 1. Right click on the ISO → Actions → Write CD Image with K3b... 1. K3b will now automatically verify the md5sum, make sure these match. 1. Place Blank CD in burner and click on start.
In Xubuntu
1. Launch the burning tool, xfburn (available at Applications > Accessories > xfburn.) 1. Choose from the main toolbar, or from the menu Actions the option "Burn CD Image", 1. From the Burn CD Image dialog box, click over (None) from "image to burn", and find the ISO image in the file browser 1. In the dialog, click 'Burn Image'.
