Introduction

This document describes how to use printers installed and shared on your network's Windows computers. /!\ Before proceeding, please ensure that the printer is installed and shared on the Windows computer. For more information, see Sharing Printers in Windows XP or Sharing Printers in Windows Vista.

Adding a shared Windows printer in Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackelope)

  1. Choose System > Administration > Printing.
  2. Click New.
  3. Expand Network Printer and choose Windows Printer via SAMBA.
  4. Click the Browse button and browse to the printer share. Alternatively, enter the path to the share manually using the syntax specified.
  5. Verify the connection to the share by clicking the Verify button. Enter your Windows username and password if prompted.
  6. Click Forward and continue through the wizard. Choose an appropriate driver for the printer and apply changes once done.

Troubleshooting

Disable Bidirectional Printing Support

If the printer is configured in Windows with bidirectional support enabled, issues may occur where the printer stalls when starting to print. To resolve this disable bidirectional support:

  1. Choose Start > Control panel > Printers & Faxes.
  2. Right-click on the printer and choose Properties.
  3. Select the Ports tab.
  4. Uncheck Enable bidirectional support and click OK.

Shorten Printer Share Name

While long share names can be used, some users have reported resolving issues by reducing the printer share name to less than 8 characters.
