An ISO is a complete image designed to be burned onto a CD or DVD. They have the extension .iso. The standard File Roller can treat iso images like a compressed file and can extract the content of the image. A more convenient way to is usually to mount the iso directly into the file system, see MountIso. Ubuntu (and other Linux distributions) ship as ISO images.
