Introduction

DVD authoring requires a large number of separate libraries and scripts. Several graphical applications exist to bring these scripts together and control them using a coherent interface. This page explains some of the options for authoring DVD's under Linux and the applications that can help.

Ubuntu Packages

DVD Authoring packages available from the Ubuntu repositories and compiled to run on Ubuntu. Be sure you understand the differences between the Main, Universe and Multiverse repositories before installing any of the packages listed here.

Installed by default (7.04)

None

Available from the Main repository (7.04)

None

Available from the Universe repository (7.04)

DeVeDe

DeVeDe can be installed in Ubuntu 7.04 from the Multiverse repository. It "is a program to create video DVDs and CDs (VCD, sVCD or CVD), suitables for home players, from any number of video files, in any of the formats supported by Mplayer. The big advantage over other utilites is that it only needs Mplayer, Mencoder, DVDAuthor, VCDImager and MKisofs (well, and Python 2.4, PyGTK and PyGlade), so its dependencies are really small." DuncanLithgow tested version 2.1 alfa 2. No useful results, filed following bugs: mkisofs fails to make DVD with DeVeDe 2.1, DeVeDe reports success on failure DuncanLithgow tested version 2.8 from http://linuxappfinder.com/package/devede (sid). No useful results, filed bugs: mkisofs fails to make DVD with DeVeDe 2.8 Stefan tested DeVeDe with ubuntu 7.10 standard devede package; just mplayer requires version 1.0rc2 (use backports version like described on the DeVeDe homepage) and it works fine for me when 1st creating a MPEG PS A+V file using Avidemux, saving it and then creating an DVD image with DeVeDe.

'Q' DVD-Author

"The goal of 'Q' DVD-Author is to provide a complete DVDAuthoring solution for Linux with the emphasis of ease of use and a complete set of functionality." - from the 'Q' DVD-Author web site Installing_'Q'_DVD-Author by JamesRevillini 'Q' DVD-Author can be installed in Ubuntu 7.04 from the Multiverse repository. It uses the Qt libraries and offers graphical menus with previews. You should manually check if you have the required and recommended packages. 2007-09-09, hansharhoff, Feisty 7.04: I tried using qdvdauthor. After installing it I had to make sure I had the right tools installed. In the setup page there is a tab called paths. There you can see the tools that you have installed as well as the ones you might need. I installed transcode and used that because I couldn't get the others to work(mencode and videotrans). To install the necessary packages run: sudo apt-get install qdvdauthor lame transcode DuncanLithgow tested version 0.1.2 (Sept 28th 2006). No useful results, stopped by bug 37943. DuncanLithgow tested version 0.1.3 (Nov 13th 2006). No usable results. Filed these bugs: Error reading wave data, segmentation fault, '//' in directory path.

KMediaFactory

KMediaFactory can be installed in Ubuntu 7.04 from the Multiverse repository. It "...is an easy to use template based dvd authoring tool. You can quickly create DVD menus for home videos and TV recordings in three simple steps."

Available from external sources

DVD Authoring packages which are not in the Ubuntu repositories. This does not mean they are of a poorer standard, but they have not been compiled by an Ubuntu developer to run in Ubuntu or gone through Ubuntu's testing process.

DVD Styler

7.04: This is now being packaged by an individual for installing to Ubuntu 7.04. I tried it and it crashed, see bug 105653. 6.10: DVD Styler promises to be the same, but uses wxWindows, which should port nicely to Windows. DVDStyler is not in the Ubuntu Repositories as of Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft). See Installing a Single Package File on how to install .deb packages.

Tovid

tovid is a collection of video disc authoring tools; it can help you create your own DVDs, VCDs, and SVCDs for playback on your home DVD player.

Polidori

The Polidori project seems to have died, it was last updated October 18, 2004 as of December 2006. It can't be used for DVD authoring. DuncanLithgow tested version 0.1 and it simply doesn't do anything.

ManDVD

ManDVD See this post about it.
