UbuntuHelp:Installing 'Q' DVD-Author

Introduction

This guide explains how to install the latest version of 'Q' DVD-Author from CVS on Ubuntu 7.10+. The reason you would want to go through all this when you could just use the "Add/Remove" programs to install it easily is that this software is still under heavy development. I expect that as things smooth out with this fantastic software, this page will just be one line: "go to Add/Remove programs, search for dvd, and check it off, then hit apply." Until then, however, this guide should be helpful for people like me who don't fully understand all the dependencies but just want to start cranking out DVDs.

Install 'Q' DVD-Author from the Application Menu

You DO still want to do the standard installation so that you will have your menus created for you so that you can just click Applications > Sound & Video > QDVDAuthor. I'm sure there are better ways to do this, but since I don't know what they are, I did this:

  1. Applications > Add/Remove...
  2. Type 'dvd' into the search box.
  3. Scroll down and check QDVDAuthor
  4. Click 'Apply Changes.'
  5. Close everything when it's done.

Download the Latest CVS Version

You want to have the latest stuff, of course, because things are getting fixed every few weeks.

Get it

  1. So go to the author's site, http://qdvdauthor.sourceforge.net/
  2. Click the 'Latest CVS' button.
  3. Select 'Open with ...' and click OK (the Archive Manager opens)

Extract it

  1. Double-click the file in the archive
  2. Click 'Extract' and extract the archive to /tmp/
  3. Close everything and open a terminal window. Time to get dirty.

Get Dirty

As long as everything has been followed verbatim on a similar setup as I have, you should be able to execute the following commands at the console and everything will just install correctly. del ~/.qdvdauthor/* cd /tmp/qdvdauthor sudo apt-get install libqt3-headers libqt3-mt libqt3-mt-dev qt3-designer qt3-dev-tools qt3-qtconfig g++ lame toolame transcode dvdauthor mencoder mplayer dvdrtools sudo ./configure

Configurator

Hopefully the configurator compiled. Now a window should be open where you can click the following:

  1. make clean
  2. compile
  3. okay

Install It

Last step: at the command line, type: sudo make install

You're Done!

Hopefully, everything went OK for you. I don't have a vanilla install of ubuntu to test on at the moment, but I will test this soon and make any additional comments or suggestions when I can.

Notes

Much information was gleaned from the Ubuntu forums. In particular: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=532504 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=465121 Thanks very much to Varol, creator of 'Q' DVD-Author. It's a brilliant package.
