Change Desktop Background/Wallpaper

How To

Let's start out with something really simple - changing you background.

1. Right-click you desktop and choose Change Desktop Background, or on the top panel click System, Preferences and then Desktop Background.

2.#2 You can select one of the backgrounds that come pre-loaded, just click the one you want. It will be highlighted in orange. Your change will be reflected in real-time, so the image will be applied instantly as you desktop background.

1. Not happy with the way your selection looks? You can choose another, or add your own. Click Add Wallpaper and you will be taken to a file browsing window where you can select a background to be added to the list from your hard drive. If there is a background in your selection list that you don't want, select it and click Remove.
2. You can also choose a style for your background - zoomed, tiled, scaled, fill screen and centered. Once again, this change will be applied in real-time.
3. If you don't want an image as a background, you can choose a colour from the swatch at the bottom of the window.

Icons

The size of icons on the desktop can be changed by opening Nautilus (for example by clicking on "places" then "home" which will open a window of your home directory). The application running this window is Nautilus. Select "edit" and "preferences" in the Nautilus menu system. In the preferences tab, selecting the default zoom level for icon view in Nautilus adjusts the view in each Nautilus folder and also the size of icons on the desktop.

Screensaver

Changing your screensaver is something else you will undoubtedly want to do. Here we'll show you how to set a new screensaver, set the delay and add a password to your screensaver.

How To

1. To open the Screensaver Preferences, go to System, on your top panel, then Preferences and then Screensaver.

2.#2 By using the selection panel on the left you can scroll and select a screensaver of your choice - when selected, it will be previewed in the panel at the right of the window.

1. If you'd like to see a full-screen preview, click the Preview button to try it out - once you have seen enough, you can click the Leave Fullscreen button at the top-right of the preview.
2. To set the screensaver delay, the time between your last keystroke or mouse movement to when the screensaver is activated, drag the bar to the desired time length.
3. There are now two more tick boxes at the bottom of the window - the first of these activates the screensaver, if this is unchecked the screensaver will not appear when your computer is inactive.
4. The second of these allows you to lock the screen once the screensaver is activated. If you check this box you will need to enter your account password when you return to your computer. This could be a useful security feature.
