* Launchpad Entry: UbuntuSpec:update-and-shutdown

Summary

This specification describes a feature whereby users may select a "Install Updates and Shutdown" option from the gnome-power-manager screen on logout. When clicked, the computer would download and install any available updates, and then automatically shutdown.

Rationale

Frequently, when updates become available, a user will not immediately install them, wishing to avoid being distracted from their current task. By the time they are undistracted, however, they may wish to shutdown their computer. Giving the user the option of installing available updates in an unattended manner, followed by an automatic shutdown, would be very useful in these situations.

Use Cases

    • Alice notices that some updates are available. Being involved in typing a paper, she does not wish to stop what she is doing, so she does not immediately install the updates. When she finishes her paper, it is late, so she goes to log out. She selects the "Install Updates and Shutdown" option, secure in the knowledge that her computer will be powered down for the night, and fully updated when she turns it on the next day.

Scope

Add a new option to the GNOME logout screen titled "Install Updates and Shutdown."
