Basic Information

What is Suspend?

Suspend--often referred to as "sleep" or "suspend to RAM"--is a power consumption mode which virtually shuts down your computer. It differs from a normal shutdown in several ways:

  • The power consumption is almost null.
  • It takes only seconds to start and to wake up.
  • Your session is frozen until wakeup.

What happens under the hood when you suspend your computer is very simple. In an everyday normal situation, everything that you are doing on your computer is stored in your RAM. Suspend simply freezes that information in your RAM and shuts down every other part of your computer, which is why power consumption is so significantly reduced.

Who Uses Suspend?

Suspend is a feature that is mostly benefited from in laptop computers. Laptop computers can trigger this mode by simply closing the laptop lid. This way their computer will start a stand-by mode and rapidly wake up upon the opening of the lid, making it possible for the user to quickly get back to the system. Desktop computers may use this method too, but it is not nearly as useful.

How to Suspend

There are several methods one may use to suspend a computer.

Closing the Lid (for Laptops Only)

This is perhaps the most popular methods among all the popular operating systems. It consists of simply closing the laptop lid. After this is done there is no need of waiting until the suspension completes--the user might just close the lid and pack the computer in his briefcase. If this method is not enabled by default on your computer, you might need to access the Power Management Preferences (System > Preferences > Power Management) and select which method will trigger the suspension on your computer.

Key Combinations

There are some key combinations you can press in order to put your computer to sleep. In laptops it is common to find a Fn key, which will work as a modifier to other keys in your keyboard. The key that will suspend your computer when Fn is pressed will most typically have a small moon icon. (Which key combination will make a desktop enter suspension mode?)

Time Driven Method

The time driven method will set your computer to wait a determined period of idleness (starting from 6 minutes) before the computer is automatically suspended. In order to access this feature, please configure it at the Power Management Preferences (System > Preferences > Power Management).
