Step 4. Package Change Review

After a a couple of the steps complete in the Distribution Upgrade dialog, you will be presented with the Package Changes dialog. Review the changes to be made and then press the Start Upgrade button. Example: Package Changes Dialog<
> 模板:Http://www.kubuntu.org/~jriddell/9.04-upgrade/hardy-upgrade-5.png Now would be a good time to take a small break. Grab a bite to eat as well as a beverage of your choice. Right now might also be a good time to take your dogs for a walk. Go play with the family, hug your neighbor, or wave to a vehicle as it passes by. Why? Because right now all of the upgrades will be downloaded and installed. Note: If the connection to the Net is lost during this stage, The install tool will abort. But if you reconnect and restart the process, then once the channels are set, the file count should resume where it left off.

Step 5. Configuration File Change

This step may or may not occur for you depending on if you have manually changed configuration files on your system. If you are presented with the Configuration File Change dialog, press the Show Difference button to see what the system would change, and press the Keep button to retain YOUR settings, or press the Replace button to go ahead and overwrite your settings with the new package settings. If in doubt press Replace. Example: Configuration File Change Dialog<

Step 6. Obsolete Packages

Another step that you will more than likely be presented with. Potential reasons for this dialog are:

  • A new application replaces and existing application
  • The old application is no longer compatible with the installation

If you are presented with the Obsolete Packages dialog, you will be provided the ability to either keep or remove obsolete packages. Press the Keep button to keep the packages, or press the Remove button to remove them. Example: Obsolete Packages Dialog<

Step 7. Reboot

The final step in the upgrade process is to go ahead and reboot your machine. Example: Restart required dialog<

Troubleshooting

If you get an error stating one of these possibilities:

  • Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
  • Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
  • Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

...open Konsole and enter the following command follwed by the Enter key:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

Afterwards, reboot, and try the upgrade again. This should help to fix any broken packages that are missing due to upgrade problems.
