Introduction

JDeveloper?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=jdevicon.png Oracle JDeveloper is an advanced editor for the Java programming language. The software is optimized for professional use, but can also be used by enthusiasts and amateurs alike.

JDeveloper is not by default available in the official Ubuntu repositories, and Oracle do not (yet) provide a self-installing .deb file. Luckily, they provide a "base installation" with most of the materials needed to allow you to compile JDeveloper yourself. This page deals with installing JDeveloper 10.1.3.3 on Ubuntu Linux 7.10 ("Gutsy Gibbon"). Please note that future versions of JDeveloper may have new requirements, and might therefore possibly not work.

Installation

Get Java

Obviously, JDeveloper will need to have Java installed in order to work - to be more precise it needs a Software Development Kit ("SDK"). This can be installed through the official repositories, so activate all four of them (main, universe, commercial and multiverse) if you haven't already done so.

  1. Go to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
  2. Enter the password for your user account and press OK
  3. Press 'Search', and enter sun java into the search field
  4. Look for the most recent SDK - at the time of this writing (February 08) it is sun-j2sdk1.6, but this may be a subject to change
  5. Press Apply Changes and, if asked, enter your password.
