Upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) on the Dell Mini 9

There are no official upgrades for systems that came with Ubuntu pre-installed from factory as of Dec. 31, 2008.

Installing Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) on the Dell Mini 9

The Mini does not have a built-in optical drive so an installation CD cannot be used straight away. However, there are a couple methods for installing Ubuntu on systems without DVD or CD drives:

  1. Use an external optical drive to install from a CD
  2. Copy the contents of the installation CD to a USB drive; such as a memory stick or flash drive and make the USB drive bootable (see, Installing|Ubuntu from a USB drive

Enabling sound

If you have decided to install Ubuntu on your Mini 9, the audio will not work until you add a line to your alsa-base file. This is done by:

  1. Opening the alsa-base file. From the Terminal:
    sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

  2. Add this line to the end of the file:
    options snd-hda-intel model=dell

  3. Save the file and exit.
  4. Reboot the computer.
  5. Once the computer is booted, double-click on the sound icon in the toolbar.
  6. Increase the speaker volume.
