If you own an Intel GMA965 (a.k.a. GMA X3100) based graphics card, Compiz will not work for you by default. You can, however, enable Compiz Fusion. Just type-in this command in terminal: echo 'SKIP_CHECKS="yes"' >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager Then, log-out and log-in again (no need to restart the whole system). You should now see the new effects. This will, however, cause problems with video playback. If you are using Ubuntu, you can fix that with this procedure:

1. press ALT+F2
2. in the dialogue, type: gstreamer-properties
3. Under video, select X11 instead of XV for output

If you are using Kubuntu, in Kaffeine you can use this procedure:

1. go to Settings -> Xine engine parameters
2. in the dialogue, go to video
3. in the driver drop-down list, select xshm
