Introduction

This page is a work in progress currently. Feel free to add your knowledge or just a question if you have one. somebody in the future will see it and provide an answer. Of course if you have a technical question or problem getting ndiswrapper functionioning, this is not the place for support. You will find FAQs on the ndiswrapper wiki here.

What is Ndiswrapper?

Ndiswrapper is piece of software for wireless cards that fools the Windows driver into thinking you have a Windows system.

Will it make my wireless card work?

There is a very good chance that your card will work with Ndiswrapper, providing that you have a compatible Windows driver and a small degree of patience.

Which driver do I need?

The driver required varies with each wireless card, there is no one driver that works with all cards. It's usually a good idea to start with the one that was supplied on the Windows Driver CD. It usually has a filename with a .sys extension. You will also need the .inf too.

Where can I get the driver from?

Most manufacturers have a download section on their website where you can download the newest driver for your specific card. You can also look on the Ndiswrapper homepage for recommended locations.

Is Ndiswrapper supplied on the Ubuntu CD?

The Ndiswrapper kernel module is supplied on all Ubuntu CDs, but this will not work on its own. You will need to install a two additional packages called ndiswrapper-utils and ndiswrapper-common. These are included with the alternate CD and DVD, but not the desktop CD.

Technical

Q. I see hardware present, driver present but no wlan0 when I run iwconfig nor is it listed in the networking window.

  1. There is a device and recognized driver but it's not the correct driver needed for the device to work with ndiswrapper. Even though you pulled it from your devices cd or the manufactures site specifically, it is still a windows driver. You need to find one that is compatible and works.

Q. What is the purpose of the .sys and .bin files as they are not used during install process?

  1. These files are not used during install but are needed for the driver to function properly.
