Firefox
UbuntuHelp:Firefox is the default web browser in Ubuntu. It is a lightweight web browser based on Mozilla and offers the following features:
- Tabbed Browsing - open multiple pages within the same window
- Pop-Up Blocking - blocks pop-up advertising windows
- Search Bar - perform searches on a large number of sites without extra software
- Standards Support - strongly adheres to web standards
- Look-and-Feel Customisation - supports themes and addons

Alternative Browsers

Dillo
Dillo is a lightweight and fast Internet browser. It does not have as many features as some of the other browsers listed here but it is well-suited for older computers that do not have enough speed or memory to run a full-featured browser.
Epiphany
A simple yet powerful web browser developed by the GNOME community. Its principles are simplicity and standards compliance. Simplicity is achieved by a well designed user interface which closely integrates with the GNOME desktop. Standards compliance is achieved on the HTML side by using the Gecko rendering engine, as developed for the Mozilla browser; and on the user interface side by closely following the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines (HIG).
Konqueror
KDE's advanced file manager, web browser and document viewer. Konqueror is an Open Source web browser that supports the current web standards.
SeaMonkey
SeaMonkey is the continuation of the Mozilla Internet Suite, which includes a web browser, a WYSIWYG HTML editor, a mail and news client, an address book, and an IRC client. SeaMonkey Web Brower features tabbed browsing and is based off the Mozilla Engine.
- Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) only: It is renamed "IceApe" by Debian; and is available in the universe repository. Install iceape for the full suite or iceape-browser for just the browser.
- Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) and later: It is named "SeaMonkey" again; and is available in the universe repository. Install seamonkey for the full suite or seamonkey-browser for just the browser.
Lynx/Links
Lynx and Links are character-based web browsers that can be run inside a terminal or on the console.
- Lynx - a pure character-based web browser that only supports text browsing. Package "lynx".
- Links - provides the same character-based web browsing as Lynx, however it also can be run in graphical mode to support the viewing of images. Package "links" in universe repository.
- ELinks - many improvements over LInks. Package "elinks".
Opera
Opera claims to not only to be the fastest web browser, it also claims to be the most powerful web browser available. Opera supports many more web standards than other browsers, for example animated SVG. Until recently, Opera was either available as a commercial product or an ad-supported product. Opera is now available as a free product without ads. Opera is available in Ubuntu's/Canonical's commercial repository. OperaBrowser contains instructions on how to install Opera on Ubuntu.
Iceweasel
Iceweasel is a rebranding of Mozilla Firefox. It is essentially Firefox but without the non-free components such as images and plug-ins. The rebranding is currently taking place as two independent projects. projects. One is part of the Gnuzilla project, a GNU project to provide versions of Mozilla programs using entirely free software. The other is a rebranded build prepared by Debian. The two projects might merge in the future. Iceweasel is currently in the unstable repository. If you wish to install Iceweasel, you can follow the instructions on Installing|Ice Weasel.
Setting Default Browser
In the command line, type
sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
A list of installed browsers will be displayed with a different number next to each browser. Type the number corresponding to the browser of your choice.
