What is WICD?

WICD is a replacement for gnome network manager. It is an open source wired and wireless network manager for Linux which aims to provide a simple interface to connect to networks with a wide variety of settings.

Installing WICD

The following instructions should work for Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) with the gnome desktop manager. For KDE, please see this thread: "KDE WICD"

Respositories

Open synaptics package manager (System / Administration / Synaptics Package Manager) Go to Settings / Repositories / Third Party Software / Add... Now enter the following line: deb http://apt.wicd.net gutsy extras Note that you will need to change gutsy if you are not running Ubuntu 7.10. Click on Add source, then close. Now click on the reload button. This should reload the lists with the new repository included.

Add the package

Now click on search and enter "wicd". Right click on the package, select "Mark for installation", then click on Apply. You will be prompted asking if you are happy to let it remove the gnome network manager. This is fine. WICD should offer all the same functionality plus extra under a more compatible setup.

Adding they tray icon

You will probably want to have a tray icon that displays your network status. This can be added by going to System / Preferences / Sessions. Then select the startup programs tab and click on the Add button. Enter "WICD" as the name and "/opt/wicd/tray.py" as the command. When you restart the icon should appear in your tray.

Configuring WICD

You can access WICD either through Applications / Internet / WICD, or by double clicking on the tray icon (see above). You should see a list of available networks. Clicking on the arrow next to the name will allow you to change the preferences such as setting a static IP or connection key. Clicking on the blue connect link will connect to the network.
