General Upgrade Information
An upgrade is the process of going from an earlier version of Ubuntu to a newer version of Ubuntu. An example of this would be going from Ubuntu 7.10 to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. To avoid damaging your system, upgrading should only be done from one release to the next release (e.g. Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 9.10) or from one LTS release to the next (e.g. Ubuntu 6.06LTS to Ubuntu 8.04LTS). If you wish to 'skip' a version, you can backup your data and do a fresh installation, or progressively upgrade to each successive version. For example, to upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.10, first upgrade to 9.04, then upgrade 9.04 to 9.10. It is generally recommended that you run the latest version of Ubuntu as there is always added support for new hardware, and is usually more optimized/faster. The LTS version is recommended for people in an environment (generally commercial/industrial) that want to keep the same version for a longer amount of time and do not require newer/faster/updated versions, but instead do not want things to change. An easy way to test a newer version of Ubuntu for compatibility with your machine is trying the Live CD before upgrading.
To find your Ubuntu version:lsb_release -a
Using packages from repositories not controlled by Ubuntu is not recommended as it can be a security risk and may break or complicate your upgrade. If you have used !EasyUbuntu or Automatix (neither of which is recommended nor supported), you may have problems upgrading to a newer version and may require a fresh install. If you have installed software from other sources, the upgrade may go more smoothly if you remove this software before attempting the upgrade.

Supported (Current) Versions
Supported versions of Ubuntu have finished their testing and are reliable and recommended for every day normal use. This is what you would usually have installed on your machine. A generic upgrade guide can be found here, this guide does not mention specific quirks per release. Refer to their own upgrade notes as mentioned below.
From 9.04 to 9.10

Only the Server Edition of Dapper Drake is still supported. The Desktop Edition has reached EOL.

LTS stands for 'Long Term Support', meaning the Desktop Edition is supported for three years, and the Server Edition is supported for five years. 'Supported' means that Ubuntu will continue to provide security updates, etc. for the entire term of 'support'. |
Beta Versions
Beta versions of Ubuntu are still in development, not yet fully supported, and may contain significant bugs, but skilled and confident users may wish to upgrade in order to provide feedback to the Ubuntu team in advance of the final release. To upgrade to Karmic from Jaunty, just run (Alt+F2) "gksudo update-manager -d"
Unsupported (Obsolete) Versions
End-of-life releases have been supported previously but have reached the end of their support cycle. It would be best for users of these versions to perform a fresh install of the latest Ubuntu release. Links have been removed since the upgrades between these versions are no longer supported. However, users still trying to do an upgrade can find instructions here and may find suggestions here.
