Mozilla's Thunderbird is an email application that benefits in the same way as Firefox from Extensions and themes, meaning you can shape the program around what you want to do online. Current version of Thunderbird as of <<Date(2009-01-10T00:23:26Z)>> is 2.0.0.19.

Installation

Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 and newer

To install Thunderbird, just install the following package: thunderbird. For a better integration in the Gnome environment, also install the following package: thunderbird-gnome-support.

Dapper Drake 6.06

To install Thunderbird, just install the following package: mozilla-thunderbird.

Hints and Tips

Migrating to Thunderbird

Disable word wrapping in outgoing messages

  • Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> General -> Config Editor
  • Set the preference called "mail.wrap_long_lines" to false

Disable HTML messages

  • Edit -> Account Settings -> Composition & Addressing
  • Uncheck "Compose messages in HTML format"

Google calendar integration

Thunderbird 2.0 can both view and edit Google calendars. It requires 2 extensions:

Thunderbird defaults to starting your reply below the quote. You can change this behaviour here:

  • Edit -> Account Settings -> Composition & Addressing
  • Change "start my reply below the quote" to "start my reply above the quote"
