Introduction

Helix player is the open source component of Realplayer. It handles a number of streaming and non-streaming media types, but NOT the closed-protocol, closed-source part of Realplayer which is the thing that most people are looking for. See RestrictedFormats for more information. Other media players can handle everything that the helix player can do, and more; therefore, it is unlikely you will need to install helix player. Instead, try to use totem first, this is the principle Ubuntu application for video playback. Also, ensure that you have restricted codecs installed. Search for restricted in the package manager (called Synaptic in Ubuntu), or in Add/Remove programmes. Failing that, try other media players such as mplayer, gxine, or vlc.

Media Formats

Helix supports the following:

  • Theora (Alpha 3 encoded content), Vorbis, Ogg
  • Basic SMIL 2.0
  • H.263
  • RealPix, RealText, RealEvents
  • RAM and RPM playlist formats, but NOT the proprietary realmedia formats.
  • RTSP streaming with RTP, HTTP streaming

Installation

Helix Player is in Ubuntu's UbuntuHelp:Universe Repository. For the player, install|InstallingSoftware| install the helix-player package. For the plugins, install mozilla-helix-player. Search for "helix" in using synaptic.
