Kubuntu Hardy Heron Upgrade

To Upgrade from Kubuntu 7.10 to Kubuntu 8.04 using an 8.04 alternate CD start with: 1) Insert the alternate CD, open it in a new window, open the Run Command dialog by pressing Alt+F2. Type kdesu "/cdrom/cdromupgrade" in the command box and press the OK button. <

To Upgrade from Kubuntu 7.10 to Kubuntu 8.04 over the Internet, use the following procedure: 1) Start Adept Manager. <

2) Click Fetch Updates. <

3) The Version Upgrade button should appear. Click it. <

4) With the Upgrade Wizard started, press the Next button. <

5) Read over the Release Announcement and then press the Next button. <

6) After the Upgrade Wizard completes the download and verification of the upgrade tool, press the Finish button. <

7) The Distribution Upgrade dialog will open providing you with the progress of the upgrade. <

8) When presented with the Package Changes dialog, review the changes to be made and then press the Start Upgrade button. <

9) Go and have a coffee while 8.04 is downloaded and installed. <

But if you reconnect and restart the process, then once the channels are set, the file count should resume where it left off.

10) If you are presented with the Configuration File Change dialog, press the Show Difference button to see what the system would change, and press the Keep button to retain YOUR settings, or press the Replace button to go ahead and overwrite your settings with the new package settings. If in doubt press Replace. <

11) The final step of the upgrade provides you the ability to keep obsolete packages by pressing the Keep button, or go ahead and remove the packages by pressing the Remove button. If in doubt press Remove. <

12) The last step of the entire process is to go ahead and reboot your machine. <

If everything went smoothly after the upgrade and the reboot, your desktop should look like the following: <

Kubuntu KDE 4

Installation

To get the KDE 4 desktop, after following the instructions above, install the "kubuntu-kde4-desktop" package via Adept or apt-get. You will then be able to choose which desktop environment to log into from the login manager menu.

Upgrading

If you had the KDE 4 packages installed in Gutsy then they will automatically be upgraded along with the rest of the system, no further steps will be required.
