Ubuntu comes packaged with the GNOME Desktop Environment by default, as well as the default Human theme and a bunch of other themes; some focusing on accessibility, others merely on different colours and icons for visual pleasure.

=== GNOME's visual components ===

The things that manage the GNOME user interface are individual programs, who each manage stuff like window borders, desktop wallpaper/folder view, screensaver and login screen.

These different parts all come together to form GNOME, which is a desktop environment.

The individual components that make up GNOME are:

- Metacity (GNOME's window manager, that displays the window borders of all windows), <
>

- Nautilus (GNOME's file manager, which, besides displaying your files, also renders your desktop and desktop wallpaper), <
>

- gnome-panel (The panel application which displays your panels), <
>

- GTK+ (Draws whatever is inside your windows---buttons, text windows and so on)

=== Basic customisation ===

The main theme controls in GNOME, located in '''System → Preferences → Theme''' allow you to change between full "visual styles", so to speak, while the
<nowiki>Customise</nowiki>
button on the right of the dialogue allows you to change different parts of the theme, such as the controls (windows borders, dialogue buttons and so on.

It's possible to combine different ''icon sets'' and ''controls'', and some controls even allow you to change their colour schemes, in the "Colours" tab (such as ''Clearlooks'' or ''Crux'', both of which are bundled with Ubuntu).

The main focus of the default Ubuntu desktop and the Human theme is on the brown and orange tones, which make for a calm but distinctive theme.

=== Editing your GNOME panel ===

Besides changing your GNOME theme, you can also edit the GNOME panel to your liking; so e.g. instead of having two panels, you can have one panel with just the info you need.

The method to do so is pretty easy. Most of the GNOME panel applets are locked in place by default, so before being able to move them, you have to unlock them. A couple of applets that are locked by default are:

- The "Menu Bar" applet (the menus for Applications, Places and System---the one with the {*}-icon), <
>

- The "Quit..." applet (the quit button in the top-right corner of your screen), <
>

- The "Wastebasket" applet (the little waste basket in the lower-right corner), <
>

- The "Window List" applet (the long bar at the bottom accounting for your open windows), <
>

- The "Show Desktop" applet (the desktop applet in the lower-left corner, which, when clicked, minimises all open windows and displays your desktop), <
>

- The "Clock" applet (the clock in the top-right corner of your screen).

Of course, these aren't the only ones that are locked in place. To unlock an applet, right-click it and untick the "Lock To Panel" item. Then right-click the item again and select move. You can now drag the applet to your desired position.

You can also add new applets to your panel by clicking in an empty spot on the panel and select "Add to Panel...", then drag one of applets to your panel.

<!> '''Note:''' You may want to lock the applet to its new position by reversing the step above: by right-clicking the applet and ticking "Lock To Panel". The applet will now remain in that position.

=== Composite managers ===

One of the thing that will truly make your friends' heads turn, is the ability to add composite managers, which allow you to use astounding effects, such as wobbly windows, a rotating cube whose faces act as your different workspaces and just generally good-looking effects, which Ubuntu has very good support for, as of Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn.<
>

To enable the built-in composite manager "Compiz", just go to '''System → Preferences → Desktop Effects''' and turn it on. Ubuntu may ask you to download some proprietary drivers to make the composite manager work; these are ''nvidia'' or ''fglrx'', depending on your graphics card (NVIDIA users use ''nvidia'', ATI users use ''fglrx''. In order to run either of these composite managers, you need to install XGL. [[UbuntuHelp:CompositeManager/Xgl| XGL]] runs on top of a separate Xorg server and adds support for indirect 3D rendering to any graphics card. On Feisty, XGL will be automatically installed if you open the ''Desktop Effects'' item in '''System → Preferences'''.

=== Miscellaneous ===

==== Wallpapers ====

Changing your wallpaper in GNOME is very simple: right click your desktop, choose "Change Desktop Background" and select an image from the dialogue, or press "Add Wallpaper" to add an image of your own.

==== Changing screen resolution ====

Instructions on changing your screen resolution can be found [[UbuntuHelp:FixVideoResolutionHowto|here]]

==== External sources ====

There are tons of websites with themes, visual styles, wallpapers, icon themes, cursors and sound themes for GNOME (and Compiz). Some of these are listed here:

* [http://gnome-look.org/ GNOME GTK+ themes, wallpapers, icons, etc.]

* [http://art.gnome.org/ GNOME's art repository]

* [http://compiz-themes.org/ Compiz themes]

==== Noteworthy packages ====

A lot of GNOME-themes are pre-packaged and available in the repositories.

A(n) (incomplete) list of these packages can be found at Gnome/Customise/NoteworthyPackages.

Happy customising!
