Pidgin

Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, and Zephyr networks.

Pidgin users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time and in the same tabbed window!

Pidgin supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer, custom away messages, typing notification, and MSN window closing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, and more.

Installing Pidgin

If you do not have Pidgin installed on your system, you can install it a number of ways: through Adept Manager, Synaptic, or in a terminal. To install it in a terminal, use the following line:

sudo apt-get install gaim
</code>

=== Setting up Pidgin ===

Start pidgin with: '''Applications''' -> '''Internet''' -> '''Gaim Internet Messenger'''

Before you can use Pidgin you need existing accounts with one of the following protocols. Pidgin supports:

* AIM ([http://my.screenname.aol.com/_cqr/login/login.psp?siteId=snshomepage&authLev=1&mcState=initialized&createSn=1 Create an account ])
* ICQ ([http://www.icq.com/register/ Create an account])
* Gadu-Gadu (create an account using the official client)
* GroupWise (See your Novell server administrator)
* IRC (see [[UbuntuHelp:XChatHowto]])
* Jabber ([http://gaim.sourceforge.net/faq.php#jabber-create%20an%20account Create an account])
* MSN ([https://accountservices.passport.net Create an account])
* Napster
* Yahoo ([http://edit.yahoo.com/config/eval_register Create an account])

If you do not have any IM account you need to create an account one first, use the links above. Fill out your account information. '''Online''' connects or disconnects you from the server. '''Auto-login''' will automatically login to the IM-server when you start Pidgin.

=== Compiling ===
