Software Telephone devices can be more flexible than the hardware modems... And they are typically cheaper. Don't settle for the buy a hardware modem line, Buying open hardware will help everybody! There are no working modem models listed. Some exist, nobody seems to care to list working models! If you have a working modem please paste PCI device id, and enough product number and manufacturer and maybe a URL to a store so that people can go buy it. This modem must JUST WORK! meaning, that apt-get something-or-other and use the ppp utils, and it just plain works... If you had to download source code and compile it, IT DIDN'T WORK, go post a bug on Launchpad.

THERE ARE NONE! The driver costs 19.95 and is not GPLed.AVOID CONEXANT CHIP SETS... well ok, you can get a free 14.4 driver, which is like getting kicked in the head, FOR THAT price, you can buy about 20 other software modems and see if they work, or buy a hardware modem.
