Setting up XGL server
Here is a simpler way to setup the XGL server for desktop effects <!> This is intended for use with Gusty Gibbon and ATI Radeon and Mobility Radeon Graphics Cards. This guide is to help you set up desktop effects.
Instructions
The instructions to set up the desktop effects are pretty easy.
Step 1
Go to Terminal ( Applications > Accessories > Terminal ) The after the Terminal launches type in the following command:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl
Then press enter Then it will ask you for a password, this is your user account password, type it in(you will not see it when you are typing it) and the press enter If there are any prompts asking if you are sure say yes. Let it install and after it is done restart your computer.
Step 2
After your computer has restarted go to the Terminal again. Then type in:
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Then press Enter and then it will ask you for a password again, follow the steps listed above. After it has installed cancel out of the Terminal and then to System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings Then in that window you can select which effect that you want enabled. That should have worked, if not, then you want to consider using the more advanced way located at UbuntuHelp:CompositeManager/Xgl
