Following the success of the joint DocumentationTeam/UDSF/Ubuntu Forums meeting that occurred on Feb 4 2006 (see logs), a number of issues were raised and are outlined below:

Providing a discussion point for Wiki pages - link to Ubuntu Forums

  • Discuss with the Ubuntu Forums team on how to automate a "new post" link from the Wiki page
  • An alternative is for the PageComment macro to be installed - see the Website page for more info

Reorganising Wiki Help pages

  • Improving the clarity of help pages with one good, well-written starter page that all other subsequent pages link back to

Changing "rules" to "guidelines"

  • Reducing the number of rules
  • Changing the language of the pages to be more friendlier
  • Encourage the creation of HowTos on the Wiki
  • don't underestimate the Customization/How-To section of the Forums as a tool for QA processes to take place on userdocs. Value the Forums as a staging area for usersdocs to be refined and eliminate bugs - ~-GrantGalbraith-~
  • the general outcome of the joint meeting was that QA can be performed by the public on the Ubuntu Wiki -> HowTos should not be created in the Forums - ~- NaamanCampbell -~
  • acknowledgement that the above point, while desirable for some parties, is a long term goal and not likely to happen in the near future - ~-GrantGalbraith-~
  • in the short term work towards clearer guidelines and simpler methods for users to create HowTos directly to the wiki with links back to the Forums for discussion and QA (see next item - Reviewing Ubuntu Forums -> Wiki user path).
  • develop/recruit a team of workers that will seek relevant permissions for existing docs to be ported to the wiki from the forums.

I've started having a go at improving the usability of the guidelines. See WikiGuide (mdke)

Reviewing Ubuntu Forums -> Wiki user path

  • Replace current post for Ubuntu Forums (./) (done - mdke)
  • simpler
  • concise
  • friendlier
  • Remove confusion surrounding the creation of new Wiki docs for Ubuntu Forums users
  • Cleanup of the Forums section on the Wiki
  • stop using it as a "staging area" - create howtos directly into Wiki
  • Using a "New HowTo Title: ........" textbox to redirect to a new page in the Wiki or an existing page
  • Use a search for existing HowTo searchbox on same page as the New HowTo box to search the Wiki
  • Removing the "Use an existing template" section on new Wiki pages would really cleanup the default "Wiki page not found" page
