Introduction

This is a guide on how to set up Ubuntu on a laptop with an ATI video card that can be used for both general use and for watching videos through a television. The guide focuses on a common issue in which switching between video outputs can be difficult. There are a number of known issues that make this type of configuration difficult to set up. A common issue found is getting the proprietary drivers to work nicely. Luckily, there is a lot of help out there for getting the drivers to work, and the new "Hardy" release allows for a simple transition between the proprietary and open source drivers. I've found that YMMV (your millage may vary) on either using the proprietary or open source drivers. Please see the links below for more information on drivers. Once you get the drivers working, use this guide to streamline the ability to switch between "normal mode" and "tv mode".

  • <Link> - Explanations of links should be written as full sentences.

A see also section can be used to point users towards other trusted Ubuntu resources. For example, if a page exists in the official documentation on http://help.ubuntu.com, you can link to such a page. This section is optional.
