AVOID PCTEL based Modes.  Software Telephone devices can be more flexible than the hardware modems... And they are typically cheaper-- Like $1 vs $30. (for PCI, you can easily find ISA hardware modems are about $1)  There are no working PcTel modem models listed because there are no drivers for the later kernels, apperantly they are not open source.
