The current (Spring 2008, kernel 2.6.24) wireless-2.6 branch of the linux kernel provides two new unified wireless drivers, called [[UbuntuHelp:WifiDocs/Driver/b43]] and b43-legacy. These drivers replace the old bcm43xx. The reason there are two is that b43 works with v4 broadcom firmware and b43-legacy works with the v3 firmware.
New b43 driver still doesn't work without proprietary firmware, which isn't included in Ubuntu and must be downloaded separately, using b43-fwcutter package (from Ubuntu universe) or simply by installing b43-firmware package from http://ubuntu.cafuego.net (from Hardy distribution). New b43 driver doesn't work with old bcm43xx firmware.

Broadcom Wireless in Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy)

The bcm43xx driver (via manual install) is now considered to be deprecated as it is now included in Ubuntu 8.04 and all Linux kernel versions 2.6.24 and later.

New b43 and b43-legacy Drivers

The current (Spring 2008, kernel 2.6.24) wireless-2.6 branch of the linux kernel provides two new unified wireless drivers, called UbuntuHelp:WifiDocs/Driver/b43 and b43-legacy.

Connecting to your network

Network Manager is in control of all interfaces by default in Ubuntu 8.04 and it is available via the nm-applet in the on the upper right side of your screen, next to sound applet, etc... You can manage your connections directly by left clicking (to choose a network) or right (to see info, enable or disable networking) on it.

Manual Configuration of WPA

The bcm43xx driver has full support of the Linux Wireless Extensions and therefore should use wpa_supplicant via the wext driver interface. All known cards are capable of using WPA-PSK and WPA-Enterprise. See the WPA pages for more information about configuring Wi-fi Protected Access manually.

Further Notes

  • linuxwireless.org provides a link to the most reliable firmware source as it is the one recommended by the bcm43xx developers. This means that it has had the most testing time and is actively maintained.
