The Ubuntu Wiki has been gradually building a high quality library of information, however, the organisation of the Wiki is almost adhoc and needs some attention.  The aim of this page is to be integrated with the current WikiTeam and WikiToDo pages, and to work in with the existing contents of the WikiImprovements page.

Cleaning up the Wiki and the associated operations is a vital step for the DocumentationTeam in the leadup to the release of DapperDrake.  The following four sections describe methods on how to improve the structure, participation and utilisation of the Wiki.

On 14 March 2006, UserDocumentation was converted to a more concise format in-line with the restructuring requirements set out in the WikiCleanupProposal.  The restructuring now requires more focus on the pages that are linked-to off the UserDocumentation page.  WikiToDo lists the next stages of the restructuring, although, the bulk of the restructuring has been completed by overhauling UserDocumentation.

The joint DocumentationTeam/UDSF/Ubuntu Forums meeting (see logs) raised several issues that identified how to increase the use and the participation rate of the Wiki by the greater Ubuntu community.  The issues raised currently live at UbuntuHelp:WikiTeam/Issues.

There is a dire need for Wiki Days - similar to the GNOME Bug Days - where following a WikiTeam meeting to identify an "attack plan", the WikiTeam sets off to perform -> conversions.  A proposal is to have a Wiki Day once every three weeks in the leadup to the release of Dapper.  A WikiDay page will exist containing the "attack plan" and can be discussed in the WikiTeam meeting.

Improved Wiki starter guides and pointers in the Ubuntu Forums, along with a recruitment drive in the Ubuntu Forums, will also aim to greatly improve the numbers in the WikiTeam.

The progression of multiple Ubuntu versions has left the Wiki with documents covering differing versions with no clear way of determining what version is referred to in a document.  An easy way is to use an icon-based way of denoting that a document is specific to an older version.  For example, when Dapper is released, all Breezy related documents could have a little Badger icon at the top of the page with a "This document is specific to the Breezy Badger release" statement.

To simplify the proposal, pages that are not version-specific or that are specific to the current release have no disclaimer at the top of the page.  Pages referring to older releases should display a disclaimer at the top of the page.

Restructuring

Restructuring the Wiki can be achieved by overhauling the UserDocumentation index page. Creating a new sub-network of index pages will ensure that the UserDocumentation page is kept as concise as possible. Identifying Shortcomings
