Using an iPod

Ubuntu works well with all iPods, except the iPod Touch, iPhone, and any other future generation Apple portable devices that do not show up as a generic storage device. To sync with these new-generation devices, you must perform an unsupported Jailbreak operation to gain SSH access to the device over wifi.

Adding music, syncing, and creating playlists

For this you can use Banshee, Amarok or gtkpod. Banshee and Amarok are full music management applications that work with the iPod (much like iTunes), whereas gtkpod is a simpler application used only to sync with the iPod. All these apps can import music to your iPod, sync with your iPod, create playlists, and much more. iTunes is not currently available on Linux, although the Windows version can be used in Ubuntu using the proprietary CrossOver Office for a small fee. These applications work on every version of Ubuntu from 6.06 to 7.04.

Banshee

Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) to 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
  • Install the banshee package (see InstallingSoftware). Then click Applications → Sound and Video → Banshee.
  • Plug in the iPod to the computer. Wait for an icon to appear on the desktop.
  • You should see your iPod on the left panel, just like in iTunes.

Amarok

Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) to 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)

Install the amarok package (see InstallingSoftware). Then click Applications → Sound and Video → Amarok.

gtkpod

gtkpod is a stand alone application for syncing Ubuntu with your iPod. On the other hand, Banshee is a good alternative if you desire iTunes like support. However, banshee does not iPod video. gtkpod does in the latest versions. Additionally, banshee may corrupt your iPod data if you have used gtkpod previously. So, be careful.

Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft)

Install the gtkpod-aac package - see InstallingSoftware. Then click Applications → Multimedia → gtkpod

Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) to 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)

Install the gtkpod-aac package - see InstallingSoftware. Then click Applications → Sound & Video → gtkpod

Adding Videos to Your iPod

Newer iPods that support video also work under Ubuntu. See the following two guides: Making your videos iPod compatible Transferring Videos to the iPod Additionally, you can install encoding and transferring support for your iPod Video, as well as a GUI program for Gnome that automatically rips and encodes DVDs, or just simply encodes a video on your computer to iPod Video format. The program is called iPod Video Encoder and can be found here. Taken from the iPod Video wiki page.

Ripping CDs to MP3 and AAC

  • See RestrictedFormats wiki for information on installing software to create and play MP3 and AAC files.
