Introduction

This page describes how to configure a GTalk account on Ubuntu using Pidgin Instant Messenger.

Creating an account on Pidgin Instant Messenger

  1. Go to Applications->Internet->Pidgin Instant Messenger.
  2. Click on Add icon.
  3. In the box that appears click on Basic tab.
  4. In the Protocol list select XMPP.
  5. In the Screen Name enter your Gtalk Id.
  6. In the Domain box type gmail.com.
  7. In the Password box type your GTalk password if you want to sign in automatically on starting Pidgin or you can leave it

blank for security purposes and enter the password when it prompts for the same.

Installing Pidgin Instant Messenger

If you don't find Pidgin Instant Messenger in Applications->Internet then go to System->Preferences->Main Menu. In the Menus list click on Internet. Check whether Pidgin Internet Messenger is in the list or not. If yes, then check the checkbox besides it. If not then you have to firstly install Pidgin. The recommended way to install Pidgin is through the official Ubuntu repositories. That way you'll get the supported version. Installing through the repositories is pretty straightforward:

  1. Go to Applications -> Add/Remove...
  2. Search for Pidgin and tick the box with Pidgin Internet Messenger.
  3. Press Apply Changes and, if asked, enter your password.

For more info about how to install software from the repositories, see InstallingSoftware. To know further about Pidgin click here.
