Fix for Full-Screen Resize (e.g. during a game) Driving Monitor at Wrong Frequency with Intel Video on Gigabyte GA-8I865GME-775 (and possibly other) Motherboards

Description

When changing screen resolutions on a Gigabyte GA-8I865GME-775 motherboard (and potentially others as well) with the F2 BIOS version (and possibly lower), the builtin Intel video chip drives the signal (VGA) at an incorrect frequency. This may be noticed by the user as a message from the monitor, such as "Signal Over Range!" on the Tyris T701DB, or simply a lack of video output. There may also be messages in /var/log/Xorg.log.0 about failed VBIOS checksums.

Solution

While not at all obvious when seeing the misbehavior, the solution is to download and install the F3 BIOS version for the Gigabypte GA-8I865GME-775 motherboard. This can be done either from within Windows (if a dual-boot situation), on a Floppy Drive using either the vendor-provided BIOS software or the BIOS's builtin BIOS updating software, or with a small FAT partition containing the vendor-provided update software and a CD-ROM containing the FreeDOS operating system. The system BIOS update from Gigabyte may also update the Intel video chip's VBIOS; it is currently uncertain. The BIOS update (a .exe file containing a "self-extracting" RAR archive) can be uncompressed under Linux with the "unrar" utility (provided in the Ubuntu package manager). It may be possible to uncompress the RAR archive under FreeDOS; this was not tested. The executable contained in the Gigabyte-provided "self-extracting" RAR archive is the BIOS update utility that must be used under FreeDOS. The procedure for saving the old system BIOS and installing the new one from within the BIOS update utilities is relatively self-explanatory and may change in the future and therefore will not be described here. For more assitance on updating your Gigabyte system BIOS, please contact Gigabyte Technology. Please visit the vendor's website to obtain the newest BIOS version. Please visit the FreeDOS website to obtain the FreeDOS software.

Testing Conditions

Tested: Gigabyte GA-8I865GME-775 mother board with builtin Intel video chip and BIOS version F2, with a Tyris T701DB monitor. OS was Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) with current packages on June 25, 2006. Please add other test setups as they are found.
