<<Include(Tag/Moving)>> <<Include(Tag/StyleCleanup)>> <<Include(Tag/NeedsExpansion)>>

Introduction

This is the start of a project to improve the community documentation section of help.ubuntu.com, specifically the documentation of Software. That's everything in especially pages tagged as needing expansion, style cleanup or content cleanup. If you have something to contribute just tell us what you think and join in. There are several easy ways to get involved:

  • We now have an official IRC chat at irc.freenode.net #ubuntu-h.u.c (was incorrectly registered as #ubuntu-h.u.c. with the extra dot at the end)
  • You can add suggestions for improvements to the Software/CleanupTaskList and join the discussion.
  • You can add the link to the bottom of pages about software which are still missing the tag
  • You can add appropriate Tags to pages about software which you think need work.

Thanks!

Specific proposals

apt:url links

There should be support for apt:url links so users can easily install addition packages without having to go through it manually. From HelpOnConfiguration, this is how it is done: Some values can only be set from MoinMoin/config/init.py (part of the MoinMoin code and thus GLOBALLY changing behaviour of all your wikis), but not from the individual wiki's config - you should only touch them if you know what you are doing: url_schemas ['apt'] When can this be done??

Proposed categories

Proposed process

2008-07-23 DuncanLithgow said: I think a plan of action is important before we start actually making big changes, and I think big changes are needed. This wiki has almost no structure, hardly anywhere are pages using the same layout. Let's start here then: Software/CleanupTaskList

KillerKiwi: Please get apt: links working in this wiki!! it nuts they don't work, also some linkage between add/remove and the wiki pages might be nice so screen shots etc could be added to add/remove Rocket2DMn: Is going to replace There are hundreds of pages still listed there. What about Also, do we want a banner for

Misc

2008-07-23, Hellow said: I uploaded a stub of what could turn out to be a functional entry for the Home Folder with a "Needs Love" header here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HomeFolder 2008-7-23, Hellow said: No they are not working, so I removed them. 2008-07-23, DuncanLithgow said: I kept the three lines at the end of this page because the template said I should, but what are they and are they working? 2008/07/01, AllanDay said: Yes, it would be much better to store this information centrally. There's a lot of reproduction on these wiki pages concerning applications. I don't know what the best way to implement such a thing would be, however. I did send an email to the ubuntu-doc list recently where I suggested a Ubuntu applications database (a slightly different idea from what you're suggesting, Duncan, but its similar). 2008-07-01, DuncanLithgow said: It just occured to me that all this content on applications should be generated automatically. Everything is online already:

  • Packages per release
  • Packages per repository

These should then be easy enough to link to any online man pages and manuals generally.

  • 2008-08-02, Rocket2DMn said: Can we please get rid of the Contributors portion that are being added to each page. While this makes sense for project homepages, it is not necessary for normal help pages in that it is a community effort and really negates the purpose of the wiki and creates extra fluff. If you want to track pages you work on, add them to your own wiki page on the Ubuntu wiki. <
    > Also please make sure you have changed all the links to the Applications project that you created before realizing the Software exists, only then can those pages be deleted. This includes the deprecated links in the Software includes banners.<
    > I would like to see some discussion about this entire process on the mailing list so that everybody involved can be brought up to speed with what is happening and contribute their ideas. I think we are on the right track, but I feel like I've been having to "figure out" this new layout that is being proposed and haven't heard much about it, other than some talk about the banners a few months back.
  • -- duncan-lithgow <<DateTime(2008-08-19T13:02:19+0200)>> For now there is no consensus on the advantages/ disadvantages of the contributors section. Feel free to remove them if you feel strongly that they add nothing. <
    > My thought on how much discussion there should be before making changes are in the archive of the ubuntu-doc list (which I do not receive email from). You will notice that once again the tone has been in favour of discussion and the actual work getting done has dropped to almost nul, I'm not going to bother trying to solve structural problems when I just get sent to the headmaster to get a permission slip first. <
    > I'm not quite sure what you mean about the Applications page and broken link.
