I just don't think that this is the best place to do it! 'Applications' is a very generic term, and this might be one of the first pages newcomers to the wiki see. I think it is important for this page to reflect the needs and interests of those users. If no one objects, I'll set up a new RecommendedApplications page (or maybe CommunityRecommendedApplications?) and move the 'Best of the Rest' material there. That way we can develop this page into something more tailored to new users and also have a dedicated place for recommendations.
