UbuntuHelp:MythBuntu 8.10 Install Tips

These are !MythBuntu Install Tips that address all of the holes I've found in the !MythBuntu installation PDF documents. The PDF documents describe the install just fine but say almost nothing about the configuration. Without a significant amount of configurations you will end up with a nice looking front end that does nothing. These tips are in no particular order but maybe they will save someone some frustration with !MythBuntu. If I ever get it working on my system I'll post more specific instructions.

Install a Pdf Reader

!MythBuntu docs are in PDF but the !MythBuntu distro includes no PDF reader. If you want to read PDFs with your !MythBuntu system you must install a PDF reader

  1. From the desktop select the Applications menu, then System then Synaptic Package Manager.
  2. Enter your password to access the package manger.
  3. Type 'xpdf' in the search box (or the name of your preferred PDF reader).
  4. Check the box next to 'xpdf-reader' and click the apply button.
  5. Wait for package to install.
  6. Read the Mythbuntu pdf documentation by double clicking the PDF file.

Note: The first time you open a PDF you may need to select XPDF as the default application for the PDF file extension.

If you have an Nvidia Ti 4800 graphics card DO NOT use proprietary drivers

I've have yet to encounter a distro that can "automatically" install Nvidia's proprietary Linux drivers. I've always had to resort to editing the xorg.config file by hand and never in the same way twice. I haven't gotten the proprietary drivers working for my card buy maybe someday. If you get a black screen after changing an X window, restart X by typing sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart to cause the X server to close enough to trigger a 2 minute window during which you can switch to another console (ALT F1 for example) and edit or delete the xorg.config file. Or you can reboot in the recovery mode and select a root console where you can really mess things up.

Sound does not work on my PCTVHD 3000

I haven't figured this one out yet since a stock Ubuntu install provides sound just fine and KnoppMyth 5 provided sound just fine and sound works under Windows XP. I have both digital (SPDIF) and analog connections to the amp and both work under other OSes but no sound in !MythBuntu.

DVD Playback under the front end does not work

I just get a black screen and have to hit the reset button as I can't kill the X server and can't figure out how to bring the system down gracefully. However if you kill the front end and use one of the media players from the desktop you can play a DVD but the interlacing artifacts (at least with Xine) are rather nasty.

Your video capture device must be configured correctly

Plus a video source must be defined and the two must be connected under the Input Connections section of the backend configuration menu. The best bet is to look up your specific hardware for guidance in setting up MythTV and avoid V4L (Video for Linux) capture card types in favor of DVB or MPEG-2 types. I believe V4L is obsolete

Dual Monitors

If you have two displays attached, disconnect one and reboot before installing MythTV. It is possible to run on a dual-head display, but more complicated and less automated.
