Software compatability
My understanding at 10 Apr 2007 is: the uvc drivers support V4L2, a more modern version of V4L (Video for Linux). The problem is that a lot of software uses the old version, so a lot of software wont actually work with the webcam. I did get a message about a patch in Kopete, so it might be worth Googling for kopete uvc to see if anything is of interest.
