What are Repositories?

There are thousands of programs available to install on Kubuntu. These programs are stored in software archives (repositories) and are available for installation over the Internet. This makes it very easy to install new programs. It is also very secure, because each program you install is thoroughly tested and built specifically for Kubuntu. The Kubuntu software repository is organized into four "components", on the basis of the level of support Kubuntu can offer them, and whether or not they comply with Ubuntu's (and Kubuntu's) Free Software Philosophy. The components are called Main (officially supported software), Restricted (supported software that is not available under a completely free license), Universe (community-maintained, i.e. not officially supported software) and Multiverse (software that is "not free"). You can find more information about the Repositories here. The Kubuntu Install CDs contain software from the Main and Restricted components. Once your system is made aware of the Internet-based locations for these repositories, many more software programs are made available for installation. Using the software package management tools already installed on your system, you can search for, install and update any piece of software directly over the Internet, without the need for the CD. Canonical, now maintains a repository which contains commercial software such as Opera and Real Player specifically built for Ubuntu. These are however not open source software. Adding Repositories in Kubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty)

In progress Click KMenu -> Applications -> System -> Software Management to launch KPackageKit Click Settings > Edit Software Sources. You will be prompted for your password to be able to launch a "Software Sources" dialog. Filling this out is the same as in Hardy (see below). If you are prompted "The information about available software is out-of-date", click [Reload] to load new package information. You can now return to KPackageKit, and either click "Software Management" to search for packages from the new repository, or click "Software Updates" if the repository offers updates to your packages. One limitation of KPackageKit is it cannot handle updates that install new packages.

Adding Repositories in Kubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)

To launch adept hit KMenu -> Applications -> System -> Package Manager (Adept Manager) . Kubuntu?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=KubuntuAddRepoIntrepid_0001.png Next you will be prompted for your password to be able to launch adept as super user. Kubuntu?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=KubuntuAddRepoIntrepid_002.png Click Sources -> Edit Software Sources Kubuntu?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=KubuntuAddRepoIntrepid_03.png A new window opens. (If it doesn't you might not have the package `software-properties-kde` installed). Here you can control your whole repository list and its content. Kubuntu?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=KubuntuAddRepoIntrepid_04.png Just select the options you want to activate, or enter the repository URL in the Third-Party Software tab, and hit Close. Now hit Fetch current package lists. You will now be able to get packages from the activated repositories. Kubuntu?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=KubuntuFeistyAdeptRepoAdd_03.png On the menu of that screen you will want to click on Adept -> Manage Repositories Kubuntu?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=KubuntuFeistyAdeptRepoAdd_04.png A new window opens. (If it doesn't you might not have the package `software-properties-kde` installed). Here you can control your whole repository list and its content. Kubuntu?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=KubuntuFeistyAdeptRepoAdd_05.png Just select the options you want to activate, or enter the repository URL in the Third-Party Software tab, and hit Close. Now hit Reload when you're advised to reload the information about available software. You will now be able to get packages from the activated repositories.
