There are several methods of obtaining Ubuntu. Ubuntu releases a new version every six months. There are two stable versions of Ubuntu available. The Current Stable, and the LTS version. For approximately the first six months after its release, the LTS version and the current stable version are the same. LTS is an initialism meaning "Long-Term Support". This means that it is supported for 5 years on servers and 3 years on the desktop. By contrast the stable version is supported for 18 months on both desktop and servers. Neither is inherently more stable than the other. The current stable version is Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala), which was released October 2009. The current Long-Term Support (LTS) version is Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron), which was released April 2008.

Stable Versions
You can get Ubuntu 9.10 Current Stable, Ubuntu 9.04, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, or Ubuntu 8.10 from the following locations:
Download the Live Desktop CD
The Live CD provides a non-intrusive desktop running from CD, and a graphical installer.
- Go to the Official Download Page
- Select the Desktop Edition that you wish to install.
- In the Choose a download location near you taskbar, select the location that is closest to you.
- In the Custom Options menu, select the version that you wish to download. Most users should select 32bit version
- If you have a 64-bit system (AMD64 or Intel Core 2 Duo or Quad CPU), you should select 64bit version for better performance.
- Click the Begin Download button.
- Burn the CD on to a blank disc. Please refer to the BurningIsoHowto page which describes how to verify and burn the ISO image properly.
Download the Live Netbook Image
The Netbook Image provides a non-intrusive netbook-optimised environment, running from USB stick, and a graphical installer.
- Go to the Official Download Page
- Select the Netbook Remix that you wish to install.
- In the Choose a download location near you taskbar, select the location that is closest to you.
- Click the Begin Download button.
- Write the image to a blank USB stick. Please refer to the Image File writing instructions for procedures to verify and write the image properly.
Download the Alternative Installation CD
The Alternative installation CD provides an installer that is text-based rather than graphical. It is needed for installation on computers with less than 384 megabytes of RAM.

- Under BitTorrent, choose the version of Ubuntu that you wish to install.
- Click on the version of Ubuntu that is appropriate.
- If you have a 32-bit processor, select ubuntu-x.xx-alternate-i386.iso.torrent.
- If you have a 64-bit processor, select ubuntu-x.xx-alternate-amd64.iso.torrent
- Burn the CD on to a blank disc. Please refer to the BurningIsoHowto page which describes how to verify and burn the ISO image properly.
