Transition

Many new users who are making the transition to Ubuntu will have the basic question of "What program in Ubuntu is like (insert name of Windows program) on XP?" The Linux Equivalency Project site has a very comprehensive list of what are comparable applications in addition to links to the program's website. In addition to that, the application names are clickable and some do have user comments with regard to their experiences with the application. For those who cannot live without a particular Windows application but do not like the equivalents, there is always the option to use WINE as a compatibility layer for the application. Check out the WINE AppDB to see what all may be required to make your Windows application to work. With regards to computer games, WINE can be used to play Windows computer games. Compatibility with games can vary wildly. Some are "Platinum" (well implemented) to "Bronze" (very rocky compatibility) on the application database. Cedega is a customized version of WINE specifically geared to games, but it is a monthly pay-to-use software (minimal subscription of 3 months). Users do get "votes" to cast for games that they wish to push for better compatibility for the future releases.
