[编辑] Workaround
[编辑] Method A: Rebuild/install alsa-modules
Confirmed with kernel 2.6.22-13 and 2.6.22-14:
- does work: Latitude D630, Latitude D830 (8086:284b (rev 02), codec: SigmaTel STAC9205), Precision M4300, XPS M1210, Vosro 1500 (Partial fix - issues with internal speakers not muting and microphone does not work - codec: SigmaTel 9205), Lenovo 3000 V200, Sager NP9880-C
- does not work: Aluminium iMac, Asus F3SA, Dell Vostro 1400 (internal speakers still not working), HP Pavilion dv9000, Zepto Znote 6625WD, Toshiba Portege M600
cd /usr/src sudo module-assistant update sudo module-assistant prepare sudo module-assistant auto-install alsa sudo shutdown -r now
Remaining problems with this method:
- output jack does not mute internal speakers
- found no way in kmix to mute internal speakers and output jack independently (as an alternative to item above)
- output jack in the docking station is not working/recognized. the one on the left of the laptop works
- internal microphone does not work at all
- internal speakers do not work after resume from suspend/hibernate - need reboot to get them working again
[编辑] Method B: Manually build alsa-modules (1.0.15-rc1 only)
wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.15rc1.tar.bz2 tar xvpjf alsa-driver-1.0.15rc1.tar.bz2 cd alsa-driver-1.0.15rc1 ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel make sudo make install
Make sure you reboot after a successful "sudo make install". Confirmed with kernel 2.6.22-13:
- does work: Dell D830 (but not always...)
- does work: HP Pavilion dv6570er and similar models
- does not work: Vostro 1500
Confirmed with kernel 2.6.22-14:
- does work: HP Pavilion dv6575ca (and similar models)
- does work: Dell Inspiron 1520, rebuild alsa-1.0.15rc3 (sound ok, output jack and mic doesn't work)
- does work: HP Pavilion dv6500t
- does work: ASUS P5B Deluxe
- does work: Compaq v6000
- does not work: HP Pavilion dv9550eo (64-bit version if that matters)
- does not work: Zepto Znote 6625WD
Problems with Method A that are fixed with this method:
- output jack does mute internal speakers
- internal speakers do work after resume from suspend/hibernate
Notes:
- does not work with kernel 2.6.22-14 and alsa-modules 1.0.15-rc3 on Dell Latitude D630
- does not work with kernel 2.6.22-14 and alsa-modules 1.0.15 on MSI PR200
[编辑] Method C
Confirmed with kernel 2.6.22-13:
- does work: Lenovo T61p
- does not work: Aluminium iMac
Confirmed with kernel 2.6.22-14:
- does work: Dell D830, HP Pavillion dv6000
- causes gnome-settings-manager to crash on Dell Latitude D630
sudo apt-get install alsa-source cd && mkdir alsa-patched && cd alsa-patched tar -jxvf /usr/src/alsa-driver.tar.bz2 cd modules/alsa-driver/ wget -O alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_analog.c http://launchpadlibrarian.net/9021234/patch_analog.c ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel && make sudo make install sudo cp ./modules/snd-hda-intel.ko /lib/modules/$( uname -r )/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel/ sudo depmod -a
Remaining problems with this method:
- D830: output jack does not mute speakers
- internal speakers do not work after resume from suspend/hibernate
[编辑] Method D: Variant of method B
wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.15.tar.bz2 tar xvpjf alsa-driver-1.0.15.tar.bz2 cd alsa-driver-1.0.15 ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel,emu10k1 make sudo make install sudo gedit /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/modules.dep
Replace the start of the line with hda-intel in it so that it starts with this: /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko: Remove the directory /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel If sound still doesnt work, then add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
- options snd-hda-intel model=dell-3stack
- options snd-hda-intel model=5stack (For Dell Vostro; external mic does work)
Check out this link to identify the line appropriate for your machine
- https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto
- http://www.mail-archive.com/git-commits-head@vger.kernel.org/msg26330.html
If even that doesnt work and on running dmesg | grep snd if you get something like
- [ 1058.932000] snd_hda_intel: disagrees about version of symbol snd_ctl_add
- [ 1058.932000] snd_hda_intel: Unknown symbol snd_ctl_add
Then you need to copy more modules from the alsa compile directory. Check this link
Confirmed with kernel 2.6.22-13:
- does work: Dell Inspiron 1720
Confirmed with kernel 2.6.22-14:
- does work: Dell Inspiron 1720, Dell Vostro
- does work: Zepto Znote 6024W
[编辑] Method E: Patch to add support for Realtek ALC268 Codec to Alsa 1.0.14
- Does work: Acer|TravelMate 6292, Acer TravelMate 5720, Compal IFL90, MSI PR200, MSI Megabook 00163C1, Extensa 5620, Toshiba A215-S7437, HP Pavilion dv9640us
- Does not work:
Support provided :
- Internal speaker works
- Headphones works (and internal speakers are automuted correctly)
- External speaker works (and internal speakers are automuted correctly)
- Internal mic doesn't seem to work...
- External mic untested.
Procedure (See #116326) :
- Rebuild the linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22 packages after applying this patch<
>
Or use this already patched, ready to install, linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic_2.6.22-14.37.1_i386.deb.<
>
Note 1: It only works with an up-to-date Gutsy.
Note 2: If you have Gutsy 8.04.1 ( linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-19 or above) then you do not need this step
- Add the following line in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
Note: You can specify one of the following model : acer, toshiba, 3stack or auto Note 2: For MSI PR200 / Megabook 00163C1 , use model=targa-dig
- Reboot
[编辑] Method F: Compile and install linux kernel 2.6.23 ...
- does work: Vostro 1500 (STAC9205)
Download latest kernel from kernel.org Follow instructions in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=311158. Make sure hda-intel drivers are enabled under Device Drivers>Sound>Advanced Linux Sound Architecture>PCI Devices Fixes:
- Sound does work after suspend
- Headphones do mute external speakers
Remaining problems with this method:
- If headphones are present when resuming from suspend (or at boot?) internal speakers do not work.
- Fix only works first time booting into the new kernel, then system reverts to previous state.
[编辑] Method G: linux-backports-modules
- does work: Compal IFL90
- does work: D530, D630, D830, Vostro...
- does work: Dell Inspiron 1520
- does work: Dell Inspiron 1720
- does work: Dell Precision M4300
- does work: Dell Precision M6300
- does work: Dell Vostro 1700
- does work: HP Pavilion dv9000
- does work: HP Pavilion dv9740
- does work: HP Pavilion dv6500
- does work (tested january 2008): Zepto znote 6625WD (use model=toshiba in modprobe.d/alsa-base)
- does work : Acer TravelMate 6292 (but internal and external mic doesn't work)
- does work: Vostro 1400(speakers and headphones working correctly from left jack, only works after adding this line to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base: options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1 model=3stack)
- does not work: iMac
- does not work: Dell Vostro 1400 (Earlier the headphones were working. After trying Method G the card itself was not recognized)
- does not work: Toshiba X205
Description: You just need to install the package linux-backports-modules-generic (metapackage to keep it up-to-date when upgrading the kernel, that will install as a dependency the package linux-backports-modules-2.6.22-14.generic). Make sure you have activated the backport sources.
sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-generic
For Dell Latitude D530/D630/D830 and Dell Precision M4300/M6300, also do the following (if you don't, the volume will increase with every sound played):
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
In the editor, add the following line at the end of the file:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m42
Save the file and reboot to get sound working correctly. If sound is too low, go to Volume Control's Preferences and add "Front" (and any other playback tracks) and make sure they are set to the maximum. For Acer Travelmate 6292, you need the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
Problems solved :
- speakers are muted and unmuted when headphones are plugged/unplugged
- the internal micro works (not very well, but works)
- suspend/hibernate
Remaining problems with this method:
- On the Vostro 1700, PCM volume slider has no effect (And thus neither has volume sliders in applications). Must use "Front".
- Internal microphone recording level is very soft.
- Master volume control is "exponential" (first 3/4 of slider has very little effect).
(I suspect the "minimum" and/or "maximum" bounds for the microphone and master volume controls are incorrect.)
- The audio jack in the Dell docking station with the D630 does not work, you must use the headphone jack on the laptop to connect external speaker.
[编辑] Method H: Straight forward for ASUS F3Sa and maybe others
- does work: ASUS F3Sa, Biostar P4M900-M4 motherboard's Realtek ALC861VD CODEC
- does not work
First install the latest version of Alsa 1.0.15 final (read this howto for 1.0.14 as example!). After, you create a file in /etc/modutils called, for example, 'alsa' with this sequence of aliases and options:
alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel # module options should go here options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo # OSS/Free alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 # card #1 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo
For a secure success, add the last line to the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base too If it doesn't exist, create! After you must restart. Before you start to dancing, run 'alsamixer' and unmute all channel and set the volume. This fix was found here.
[编辑] Method I: Solution for new iMac 20" ALC 882/885
- does work: Apple iMac 20"
- internal speakers
- headphones and automatic switch
- internal microphone
- line in
Add following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and reboot.
options snd-hda-intel model=mbp3
Remaining problems with this method:
- internal loudspeakers sounds poor but it works
Not tested:
- digital input and output
[编辑] Method J: Installing alsa-driver-1.0.16rc1
- does work: HP dv6000 (64 bit)
- does not work
Just download and build the new alsa driver and it works.
wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.16rc1.tar.bz2 tar xvpjf alsa-driver-1.0.16rc1.tar.bz2 cd alsa-driver-1.0.16rc1 ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel make sudo make install
Solved:
- Audio & internal mic. works
Remaining problems with this method:
- Headphones do not mute the speakers (which were indeed different channels in other distros)
[编辑] Method K: Using DELL's packages
- does work: Vostro 1700 (probably all the vostro line and the inspiron 1420)
- does not work: Vostro 1400 (no sound at all, have to download the proper backport file from ubuntu to fix it)
Go to http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.10/Issues/Built_In_Digital_Mic_Does_Not_Work Follow the instructions, and install the linux-backport-modules and the hsfmodem.
Remaining problems with this method:
- Seems to be not remaining problems here.
Haven't tested modem but everything else seems to work (audio, mic, good volume, etc.) and Suspend and Hibernate works.
[编辑] Method L: Avoids package or source updates by simply ensuring the best model=something parameter is given to the alsa module
The instructions here assume you are already familiar enough with rmmod and modprobe to experiment freely with module options.
Follow the instructions in 'How to identify your codec' to get the short name for your Codec
For that codec, find out the parameter value to give for the module option 'model' by consulting ALSA-Configuration.txt
from the linux source (if you already have it installed) or if not from an online repository such as
http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt
or similar
For a Dell Inspiron 1525 T5550 I had several attempts and was third time lucky:
(Failed) Attempt 1: model=3stack
(Failed) Attempt 2: model=5stack
(Success) Attempt 3: model=6stack-digout
Note: alsamixer should be used once you have the module loaded to ensure PCM, Master, and Front are all set to maximum so you really will hear your audio.
Now that you have the best model=something for your audio card you will need to find a way to have that parameter passed to the module each time your computer loads up. There are many ways (internet search for help) or the most straightforward is to add an
appropriate line to the end of the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base using a command sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base or suchlike.
- does work: Dell Inspiron 1525 T5550 (card: SigmaTel STAC9228) [Kernel 2.6.22-15 Alsa 1.0.14]
- does not work
Remaining problems with this method:
- this ...
- and that
[编辑] Method M: Add you favorite here ...
- does work
- does not work
what to do ...
Remaining problems with this method:

[编辑] How to Identify your Codec
Run the command:
grep Codec /proc/asound/card0/codec#*
Example :
$ grep Codec /proc/asound/card0/codec#* /proc/asound/card0/codec#0:Codec: Realtek ALC268 /proc/asound/card0/codec#1:Codec: Generic 11c1 Si3054
So my HD Intel Audio Controller use a Realtek ALC268 Codec.
The second one Generic 11c1 Si3054 is my modem.
You can also use the command amixer info :
$ amixer info Card default 'Intel'/'HDA Intel at 0xf0500000 irq 23' Mixer name : 'Realtek ALC268' Components : 'HDA:10ec0268 HDA:11c11040' Controls : 10 Simple ctrls : 8
If you have a sound card and a modem you may have multiple card entries in /proc/asound/. Knowing the correct audio device might help.
To check you which PCI device is audio you can run the command lspci -n | grep `lspci | grep -i audio | awk '{print $1}'` which returns PCI ID of the audio device
To list (very detailed) every Intel PCI device you might try the command lspci -nvvv -d 8086:*
