Linux installation

I used a 32-bit Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) CD-ROM. The installation went well except for the problem below. After updates, my kernel is (as reported by uname -a): Linux idefix 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Thu Jun 7 20:19:32 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Problems

PS/2 keyboard

However, with my PS/2 keyboard, it is a pain to configure the BIOS, because you have to hit the DEL key on the BIOS POST screen and the PS/2 keyboard seems to be inactive at that time. Using a USB keyboard fixes this problem. So I remove my IBM Model M (PS/2 interface) and plug in a crappy USB keyboard whenever I want to operate on the BIOS.

Sound

By far the most annoying problem. Sound does not work out of the box. The lspci command reports no sound card. See below for report of my partial success. Still no sound in the Flash Player plugin under Firefox. The onboard sound device is detected as a USB sound card: lsusb Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0d8c:0201 C-Media Electronics, Inc. Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 See at the end of this page for the full lsusb -v. I attempted to recompile ALSA with the usb-snd driver (./configure --with-oss=yes --with-cards=usb-audio) and I get only partial success. XMMS and Totem produce sound. But ESD doesn't start, Flash Player gives me a ton of ALSA-related errors. As far as I am concerned, the sound doesn't work.

The sound card works, is an ubuntu alsa 'misconfiguration' (from my point of view) that cause the problem. The /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base configuration prevent the snd-usb-audio module to grab the index 0, becaming the default audio driver. To solve the problem is sufficent to comment or delete the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:

options snd-usb-audio index=-2

After a reboot audio will work.

Video

I used an nVidia PCI video card. Ubuntu gives a max resolution of 1024x768. To get a higher resolution, simply edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the Modes lines from Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" to Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480
